Do + 動詞原型 は肯定文を強調するために使われます。過去の文では did ＋動詞原型になります。
- I think he was telling the truth -> 私は彼は本当の事を言っていたと思う
- I do think he was telling the truth -> 私は彼は本当の事を言っていたと本当に思う
- I agree with you, but most people won’t -> 私はあなたに同意するが、殆どの人はしない
- I do agree with you, but most people won’t -> 私に限ってはあなたに同意するが、殆どの人はしない
- I told him not to do it -> 私は彼にそれをするなと言った
- I did tell him not to do it -> 私は彼にそれをするなと確かに、殊更に、言った
- We went there, but it was too late -> 私達はそこに行ったが、もう遅すぎた
- We did go there, but it was too late -> 私達は本当にそこに行ったのだが、もう遅すぎた
否定文の強調は単に not を強く発音する、文章では大文字で表記する、等で行われます
- I did NOT say that -> 私はそうは言わなかった
