過去完了（had + 動詞の過去分詞）は過去の一時点から後の一時点迄続いた状態を表します。
- I had never thought about it until then -> 私はその時までそれを考えたことが無かった
過去完了は過去の仮定を表します。
- If I had been you, I wouldn’t have done it -> もし私があなただったなら、そうはしなかっただろう
- What if you had been the victim, how would you have felt? -> もしあなたが被害者だったなら、どう感じただろうか？
- What if he had been the one who left her? -> もし彼が彼女のもとから去ったのだったら？
